AM based Filament Winding Core for Bike Handlebars


Filament Winding is a manufacturing process to produce high-strength rotationally symmetrical components e.g. pressure cylinders, pipes or wings. This process involves winding filaments under tension over a rotating core – in technical jargon called "mandrel".


The challenge:

  • Manufacture the core for Filament Winding process using AM, which would be quick and cheap to produce in any possible form.
  • Evaluate the production of a light and stable bicycle handlebar.
  • Selection of appropriate materials.
  • Gaining optimal static/dynamic characteristics.
