Design and fabrication of 3D printed metal mould components by means of SLM.


This project aims to design and fabricate 3d printed metal mould components by taking advantage of additive manufacturing (AM) as an engineering technique, depending on product’s requirements. AM technology of selective laser melting (SLM)   will allow the manufacture of complex cooling channels that follow product’s   topography, known as conformal cooling channels.

The challenge:

  • Computational studies to optimize the design of conformal cooling channels in the cavity inserts.
  • AM technologies to fabricate the optimized product with high degree of freedom in manufacturing complexity.
  • Post processing treatment of the additive manufacturable product for enhancing its lifetime and quality.
  • Quality assurance on manufactured products in order to evaluate their quality, mechanical strength and geometrical performance.
